Aksa Energy has decided to invest in 35 MW of additional capacity at its Kalecik Power Plant, which meets approximately half of the electricity demand in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). With this investment, the company continues to help meet the growing energy needs of the TRNC and strengthen its energy supply security, building on more than 20 years of operations in the country.
Aksa Energy, a global energy company with 15 operational power plants across 11 countries and an installed capacity of 3,700 MW, will increase the capacity of its Kalecik Power Plant in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by 35 MW.
The Kalecik Power Plant, which has met approximately 50% of the TRNC’s electricity demand since 2003, will reach an installed capacity of 223 MW under a supplementary protocol that has entered into force pursuant to the agreement signed with the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK). Through this new investment, Aksa Energy will help meet the island’s growing electricity demand reliably and sustainably, while further strengthening the TRNC’s energy infrastructure.
An agreement signed between Aksa Energy and the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK) in 2023 extended the plant’s operating term until 2038.
“We continue to invest in the TRNC’s energy future”
Commenting on the new capacity investment, Naci Ağbal, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Aksa Energy, said:
“A robust and reliable energy infrastructure is one of the fundamental prerequisites for economic and social development, particularly in island economies. At Aksa Energy, we have pursued this approach in the TRNC for more than 20 years through our long-term investments. Our new investment in Kalecik is a testament to our confidence in the TRNC’s growth and energy future.”
“Energy supply security, particularly in island economies, means both meeting today’s needs and securing future growth. At Aksa Energy, we have been an integral part of the TRNC’s energy infrastructure for more than 20 years. Today, our Kalecik Power Plant meets approximately half of the island’s electricity demand, and we are taking this responsibility further through new investments. With an investment in 35 MW of additional capacity, we are increasing the installed capacity of our Kalecik Power Plant from 188 MW to 223 MW. In the period ahead, we will continue to provide reliable and sustainable solutions to the TRNC’s growing energy needs and contribute to the island’s energy supply security.”
