Winners of the AKSA Fotofest Photography Competition Announced

The 9th edition of the AKSA FOTOFEST Photography Competition, held with the support of civil society organizations working in the field of photography in the TRNC, brought together art enthusiasts once again. Centered around the theme of Nicosia, the competition concluded with an award ceremony attended by the President of the Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar.

Held in memory of recently deceased archaeologist and researcher-author Tuncer Hüseyin Bağışkan, the 9th AKSA FOTOFEST Photography Competition brought together the local photography community. A total of 43 photographers participated in the competition with 356 photographs.

The award ceremony took place yesterday evening at the historic Saçaklı Ev in Nicosia, with the participation of Republic of Northern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar. Awards were presented to the winners, and an exhibition featuring 51 selected works was also inaugurated. The exhibition will remain open to visitors until December 6, 2024.

356 Submissions, 6 Achievement Awards

A total of 43 photographers submitted 356 works in this year’s competition, themed “Nicosia.” In the “Life in Nicosia” category, achievement awards were presented to Mehmet Ali Karahasan, Şaziye Kofalı Kurt, and Veysi Canateş. In the “Historical Texture and Monuments of Nicosia” category, Veysi Canateş, Hasan Karlıtaş, and Şerif Özege were honored with achievement awards.

Tatar: “Art and Culture Shed Light on the Future”

Republic of Northern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar, who presented some of the awards, emphasized the importance of photography in his speech at the ceremony. He stated, “Interest in photography continues to grow. Today, technology has made it easier to capture and share images via cameras and mobile phones. It is my greatest passion that future generations can witness the natural beauty of the Republic of Northern Cyprus. We will continue to support our photographers and their artistic vision.” President Tatar also extended his congratulations to the award recipients and thanked all participants.

Altan: “Our Goal is International Recognition for Our Artists”

AKSA FOTOFEST Photography Competition Coordinator Zekai Altan highlighted the significance of organizing the event without interruption for nine consecutive years. “The foundation of this effort and the naming of the competition as AKSA FOTOFEST is thanks to the vision of Mehmet Gökyiğit. Our goal is to contribute to the development of photography in the Republic of Northern Cyprus and support passionate, professional photographers in gaining international recognition,” he said. Altan also announced that they aim to organize an even larger event for the 10th edition of AKSA FOTOFEST.
