Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Kalecik Combined Cycle Fuel Oil Power Plant (188 MW)

The TRNC Kalecik Combined Cycle Fuel Oil Power Plant began generating electricity in 2003. With units gradually coming online to meet growing energy demand, it has reached a total installed capacity of 188 MW. The plant houses 10 Wärtsilä 18V46 diesel engines, each with a capacity of 17.8 MW, and supplies approximately 50% of the TRNC's electricity needs.

With the completion of the combined cycle conversion in 2011, eight Aalborg waste heat boilers and a 13.5 MW Dresser-Rand steam turbine were commissioned. Additionally, the plant is equipped with a DeSOx flue gas desulphurisation system to reduce environmental impact.

Under a contract signed between the power plant and the Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority (KIBTEK) in July 2023, the operating period has been extended until 2038, and an agreement has been reached for an additional 35 MW capacity increase. This additional capacity was commissioned as of May 2024.

The power plant has been continuing to sell electricity under a purchase guarantee based on a US dollar-denominated sales tariff since 2003.

With its current structure, the Kalecik Power Plant is the most efficient electricity production plant in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
