Ghana Fuel Oil Power Plant (370 MW)

In 2015, a 6.5-year energy sales agreement was signed with the Government of the Republic of Ghana for the installation of a fuel oil power plant with an installed capacity of 370 MW, electricity generation and the sale of the electricity generated at a tariff determined in US dollars. In accordance with the agreement, Samsun Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant was converted into a fuel oil power plant and some of its equipment was transferred to Ghana. By using the existing equipment, savings were achieved in investment expenditures, while the construction was commissioned in a fast period of 9.5 months.

Ghana Fuel Oil Power Plant started operations in 2017. Electricity sales are made at the power plant at an electricity sales tariff determined in US dollars over a capacity equivalent to 332 MW of installed capacity. While the works for the completion of the conversion of the engines in the power plant to dual fuel (fuel oil/natural gas) continue, a new 15-year electricity sales contract based on US dollars was signed between Aksa Enerji Üretim A.Ş. and ECG (Electricity Company of Ghana), the electricity company of the Republic of Ghana, in October 2022. The plant has 15 Wärtsilä 18V46 engines and 7 Wärtsilä 18V50 engines.
